A Story of Survival, Strength and Success

GLORIA PLANNED AHEAD FOR THE VIOLENCE that periodically occurred in her home. She and her daughters slept in their clothes and she packed enough to get by for several days in garbage bags that she hid in a closet. And when the abuse would begin, she and her daughters would escape to their car, often dressing for school and work inside the cramped vehicle.

Her husband kept many guns and she feared for their lives: “I knew that if I were to go back during those times, he would have killed me” she said.

A chance encounter with a co-worker at Good Samaritan Hospital led Gloria to Family Shelter Service. After years of abuse, she had the courage, for the first time, to tell someone about her experience.

“These angels who came into my life showed me that I wasn’t the cause of what was happening to me,” she said. “Through Family Shelter’s Moms and Kids Group, I learned for the first time how seriously my children were affected; it was a safe environment where they could talk about it. At Family Shelter they learned to be kids again.”

“Family Shelter gave me back the important moments in my kids’ lives,” she continued, “all the special moments we can enjoy together. Family Shelter saved my life and my kids’ lives, too.”

Gloria is now a member of Family Shelter Service’s Speaker Bureau and often shares her story with organizations, churches, corporations and other groups.
